Climate change is an unprecedented challenge that our planet is facing in the 21st century. The Paris Climate Agreement, a landmark international accord adopted in 2015, has been at the forefront of global efforts to combat this pressing issue. As extreme temperatures and heat waves become more frequent and intense, it is imperative that we take immediate action to reduce carbon emissions and prevent these extraordinary events from becoming the new normality. This article will delve into the implications of climate change on heat waves and extreme temperatures, explore the role of renewable energy in achieving the Paris Climate Agreement, and emphasize the importance of adopting an energy-saving culture among individuals.

1. The Paris Climate Agreement: A Milestone for Climate Action

The Paris Climate Agreement was a significant milestone in the international response to climate change. It brought together 196 countries in a commitment to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with an aspirational target of limiting it to 1.5 degrees Celsius. To achieve this, each country pledged its own nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a low-carbon future.

2. Escalating Heat Waves and Extreme Temperatures

The consequences of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, with heat waves and extreme temperatures becoming more frequent and severe. Heat waves are prolonged periods of excessively high temperatures that can have devastating impacts on human health, agriculture, and ecosystems. Extreme temperatures, such as record-breaking heat events, are also becoming more prevalent, leading to heat-related illnesses and fatalities.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, are driving the rise in global temperatures. The emission of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), traps heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, intensifying the greenhouse effect and leading to global warming.

3. Renewable Energy: A Pillar of Climate Mitigation

Renewable energy sources play a crucial role in achieving the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement. Unlike fossil fuels, renewable energy generates electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, making it an essential tool in combating climate change. Here’s how renewable energy contributes to climate mitigation:

a. Zero Emissions: Renewable energy technologies, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass, produce electricity with minimal or zero carbon emissions, reducing the overall greenhouse gas footprint.

b. Energy Security: Diversifying the energy mix with renewables enhances energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports and volatile international markets.

c. Economic Growth: Investing in renewable energy industries stimulates economic growth, creating job opportunities and fostering innovation in clean technologies.

d. Adaptability: Renewable energy systems can be implemented on various scales, from small-scale solar panels on rooftops to large wind farms, making them adaptable to different communities’ needs.

4. Embracing an Energy-Saving Culture
While national and international efforts are crucial in combating climate change, individual actions collectively make a significant impact. Adopting an energy-saving culture is a fundamental step towards reducing carbon emissions. Here are some practical ways individuals can contribute:

a. Energy-efficient Appliances: Choose energy-efficient appliances and electronics that bear the ENERGY STAR label, as they consume less electricity and contribute to reduced emissions.

b. Smart Energy Consumption: Turn off lights, electronics, and appliances when not in use, and make use of programmable thermostats to optimize heating and cooling systems.

c. Sustainable Transportation: Opt for public transportation, carpooling, cycling, or walking whenever possible to decrease reliance on fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

d. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Adopt a waste-conscious approach by reducing waste generation, reusing items, and recycling materials to lessen the environmental burden.

e. Promote Sustainability: Encourage and support businesses, organizations, and policymakers in their efforts to adopt sustainable practices and reduce carbon emissions.

Climate change is an urgent global challenge that requires collective action from all sectors of society. The Paris Climate Agreement provides a roadmap for mitigating the impacts of climate change and limiting global warming, but success hinges on both national commitments and individual efforts.

Embracing renewable energy technologies is vital to achieving the Paris Climate Agreement’s goals. By transitioning from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy sources, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the intensity of heat waves and extreme temperatures.

Furthermore, individuals must embrace an energy-saving culture and make conscious choices in their daily lives. Together, we can contribute to a sustainable future and prevent extraordinary heat events from becoming the new normality, safeguarding the planet for future generations.

PRESS RELEASE issued by Hellenic Wind Energy Association

• Wind capacity reached 4,681.4 MW
• Total wind investments over 230 million euro connected to grid in 2022
• Annual development at 5.2% – Reduced compared to 2021
• Average hourly penetration of wind capacity reaches 83.4%

4,681.4 MW was the total wind capacity in Greece by the end of 2022. This results from the annual Wind Energy Statistics announced by Hellenic Wind Energy Association (HWEA).

Based on the Statistics, 68 new wind turbines of 230 MW have produced power corresponding to over 230 million euro invested. This is an increase of 5.2% compared to the end of 2021. This positive development rate is slightly reduced compared to the performance of the sector in 2021, mainly due to the increased bureaucracy and the administrative hurdles.

During 2022, the Greek Interconnection System responded without difficulties in the following large penetrations:

• The greater hourly penetration of wind capacity was 83.4% and was observed on Monday 21/11/2022 (2:00 AM – 3:00 AM) 
• Total amount of 2,138 hours, the penetration of wind capacity was over 30%
• Total amount of 4,192 hours, the penetration of RES variables was over 30% and for 1,601 hours it was over 50% 
• Total hourly RES penetration was more than 100% of the demand for 31 hours in 2022. 

 The First Repowering project in Greece by EWT and RESINVEST on behalf of PPC Renewables

In the presence of representatives of the political leadership, the region, the local government and executives of the energy sector, RESINVEST and EWT celebrated the completion of the first Repowering project in Greece on 9 Aegean islands on behalf of PPC Renewables.

The event was welcomed by Mrs. R. Savvaki, Senior Economic Policy Officer on behalf of the ambassador of the Netherlands, Mr. S. Terstal, Mr. S. Oikonomou, President of the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES), Mr. K. Mavros, CEO of PPC Renewables, Mr. C. Kok, CEO of EWT and Mr. D. Karagoules, General Manager of RESINVEST. The event was coordinated by the journalist Ms. M. Nikoltsiou.

EWT, through a public open tender, was assigned, by PPC Renewables, to undertake the design, supply, transport, installation, commissioning and maintenance of 10 Wind Farms, 22 Wind Turbines with a total capacity of 19.8MW on 9 Aegean islands, specifically in Evia, Ikaria, Karpathos, Psara, Lesvos Limnos, Samos, Chios and Mykonos, while the Greek group RESINVEST undertook as the main contractor the project management for the transportation and erection of the wind turbines. The infrastructure projects were assigned to joint venture, Electromec-Nostira and RESINVEST.

The contractors built all 10 wind farms simultaneously, with active construction sites on all the islands, despite the numerous difficulties they faced. Among the important successes of the project are the implementation of a particularly demanding and technically complex solution for the transport of the equipment to Melanios, Chios, through beach landing, for which a temporary ramp of 36 meters was built into the sea. Also, special management of the Wind Turbines had to be carried out in the Petrified Forest in Sigri, Lesvos, as a total of 650 findings were found in 3 foundations where they were transferred with special care and diligence to the Petrified Forest Museum in a specially designed exhibition space. Finally, the timely completion of the project was a challenge due to the unfavorable situation of lack of important materials for the construction of the interconnection networks, machinery and personnel due to the successive lockdowns.

Despite the difficulties, EWT and RESINVEST managed to handle all the issues that arose and currently 22 EWT Wind Turbines are in operation and generate more than 54,000 MWh per year, while at the same time contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 15,500 tons per year. Their good operation has been ensured through a 14-year maintenance contract.

Environmental management of the removed equipment was carried out on all the islands and, according to the current institutional framework, they were transferred to special management centers. Finally, for the first time all infrastructure projects are certified in terms of their construction quality by an independent body (BoP Certification).

The aim of Repowering is to make better use of the already installed equipment, the energy potential and the latest technology, which through modern wind turbines offer greater energy efficiency and better results.

Mr. Carel Kok, said in his speech “as a newcomer to EWT, I am completely satisfied to see the excellent teamwork, technical training of people, ability to overcome problems and excellent cooperation. I am proud of everything we have achieved together and I am convinced that our wind turbines together with our new Class IA model, are perfectly designed to meet the challenges and the ambitious plan for Repowering the Aegean”.

Wind Park Xerakias Kefalonia 

The completion of the construction of the wind farm in Xerakias, Kefalonia, on behalf of PPC RENEWABLES, was celebrated at the hotel St. George Lycabettus by the companies AMERESCO and RESINVEST with the presence of political leaders, representatives of the regional and local government, as well as a great number of executives in the energy sector.

The ceremony was greeted by Mr. G. R. Pyatt, the Ambassador of the United States of America, Mr. N. Papathanasis, Deputy Minister for Development, Mrs. R. Kratsa, Governor of Ionian islands region, Mr. P. Kappatos, Member of the Parliament in Kefalonia, Mr. P. Ladakakos, President of ELETAEN, Mr. K. Mavros, Managing Director of PPC Renewables, Mr. G. Sakellaris, CEO of AMERESCO, and Mr. D. Karagoules, CEO of RESINVEST.

The consortium AMERESCO – RESINVEST undertook all project management and implementation activities regarding the BoP works and the procurement, transportation and installation of the wind turbines, operation and maintenance for 15 years. The project was successfully completed in less than a year despite the pandemic, “Ianos” cyclone and local protests during its first phase.

Η Λήμνος ήταν το τελευταίο έργο που ολοκλήρωσε την ανατροφοδότηση της ομάδας των αιολικών πάρκων της ΔΕΗΑΝ σε δέκα νησιά της Ελλάδος.
Το φιλόδοξο σχέδιο απολιγνιτοποίησης της Ελλάδας απαιτεί να αντικατασταθεί η υφιστάμενη δυναμικότητα λιγνιτικής ηλεκτροπαραγωγής από πολλά έργα ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας. Ένα τέτοιο έργο είναι αυτό των 10 αιολικών πάρκων σε διάφορες τοποθεσίες στην Ελλάδα (Λήμνο, Μύκονο, Σάμο, Χίο, Εύβοια, Λέσβο, Ικαρία, Κάρπαθο, Ψαρά), με έντονη συμμετοχή της RESINVEST. Παρόλο που τα περισσότερα από αυτά περιλαμβάνουν έργα ανατροφοδότησης (δηλαδή αποσυναρμολόγηση παλαιών ανεμογεννητριών και κατασκευή νέων προηγμένης τεχνολογίας), κάποια θα έπρεπε να γίνουν από την αρχή (δηλαδή περιβαλλοντικές μελέτες, υποβολή αιτήσεων για άδειες, κατασκευαστικά έργα, σύνδεση στο ενεργειακό δίκτυο της ηπειρωτικής Ελλάδας, κλπ).

Η Λήμνος, το νησί του βορείου Αιγαίου με τις εξαίρετες συνθήκες ανέμου σε ετήσια βάση, έχει από καιρό κεντρίσει το ενδιαφέρον επενδυτών και εταιρειών ανάπτυξης ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας.

Το τελευταίο μοντέλο ανεμογεννήτριας της EWT (DW52) θα εγκατασταθεί στο νησί της Λήμνου, στην περιοχή Αγ. Σώζων, σε υψόμετρο 66 μέτρων έχοντας με τον ελάχιστο θόρυβο μεγαλύτερη απόδοση από άλλες ανεμογεννήτριες της ίδιας κατηγορίας

Venture 3.6MW Land-based Wind Park to be completed in Chios island

The wind park in Chios island (Potamia and Melanios) is part of a bigger project in Greece which consists of 10 wind parks in total, some of which include sites in Euboea, Samos, Mykonos, in other islands of the Aegean sea. 

The difficulty of this project was its location; the park where the wind turbine needed to be constructed was unapproachable from land. Therefore, in order to overcome this obstacle, project team developed a beaching construction fascilitating the vessels to transport the machines and the equipment.  

After dismantling the wind turbines in 2018, JV Elektromek SA – Nostira SA with the participation of RESINVEST to manage and build the project, started replacing the old and damaged wind turbines with new ones, larger and more efficient.
